2008 Compass Nautilus

Single beds, Simplicity suspension, 19′ with an ensuite… What’s not to love about this great van?!

Do you need a van that isn’t too heavy, capable of handling its business off the beaten track, has single beds, storage galore inside and out and all bundled together with a shower and toilet? Well, look no further, because this Compass Nautilus is the caravan for you!

Jumping straight into the good stuff, the aged front vinyl has been replaced by the Senior Caravan Repair Technicians here at The Caravan Hub with sturdy black checkerplate. Replacing the front vinyl and side checker plate means removing and refitting brand new J-moulds, inspecting the interior timber subframe for water ingress, and rot before resealing with top-shelf quality Soudal Polymer silicone. To complete a full reseal, the team has removed the windows, cleaned off the original 2008 Mastic sealant, and refitted with the best tried and tested silicone to give the new owner complete satisfaction in the product they are investing in. Removing the windows further gives the team the opportunity to inspect the Meranti timber and ply for any signs of water ingress.

This Compass Nautilus is built strong from the ground up, sitting on a Hitec Engineering chassis and 4″ A-frame, fitted with a Simplicity suspension system – the very best performing independent, heavy-duty, offroad load sharing suspension a caravan can be built with. This rear door 19′ model has been designed by experts placing the axle group further back than the center of the body, creating a low weight dispersion to the overhang behind the axle group and increasing the load forward of the axles, ensuring excellent on-road handling and towing performance. Both freshwater tanks are mounted forward of the axle group, giving the owner the option of adding more weight in front of the axles and further increasing towing performance.

The caravan body rides high on 15″ rims and tires, with one spare wheel mounted on the rear bar. There is also 4x jerry can holders mounted on the rear bar, extending the caravans current 190L water capacity possibly to 270L with jerry cans, or holding 80L of fuel. The 4″ A-frame houses the jockey wheel and a flush-mounted 50mm ball tow hitch. Inside the checkerplate front boot is a 105Ah Deep cycle AGM battery and case, battery charger and Solarforce battery protector. The front boot is fully galvanized and lined for the storage of wet items, such as tools, leads, hoses, chocks, ramps etc.

Moving inside the van, the kitchen is mounted along the rear wall and is brightly lit with natural light thanks to the large outwards opening rear window, just above the sink. All windows, including both individual single bed windows, feature insect-proof flyscreen, double-glazed UV resistant acrylic panels, and internal privacy curtains. The kitchen features a large domestic sized sink with a drying rack, a freshwater tap fed by either the 12v water pump or mains water, and a dedicated drinking water filter and spout. There is cabinet storage overhead and beneath the benchtop, with further drawers and racks inside the lower cabinetry. All cabinetry locks securely for travel with push-button locks. Opposite the dining room is further bench space, a full-sized gas oven, and grill, a 3x burner gas cooktop + 1x 240v element, and rangehood. The caravan has a modern, stainless steel styled microwave fitted and a large 150L 3-way fridge/freezer mounted above the floor or easy access to the lower shelves, and a TV station above the fridge benchtop – featuring a TEAC television, 240v, 12v outlets, and an aerial point that connects to the wind-up aerial on the roof.

The dining room is configured with an L-shaped lounge and large, movable dining room table. The lounge cushions feature a deep seating base and double rolled backrests for superior comfort – you’ll appreciate the design of this lounge! The is ample storage found beneath the seats for longer, heavier items. The benchtops are fitted with a pleasant light marble-style laminex to complement the light-cream Eurostyled cabinetry decor and the light floor lino. In a 19′ caravan, the use of predominantly light interior decorating is important to give the interior a feeling of space and serenity, with strong contrast and dark colors leaving the van feeling dull.

Moving into the bedroom at the front of the caravan, there is 2x 185cm single beds, each equipped with their own overhead reading lamp and storage beneath the mattresses. The beds are divided by the large wardrobe, that can comfortably hang clothes on coathangers inside, plus overhead cabinetry above each bed. There is also a dust exclusion vent fitted above the bedroom, that helps pressurize the cabin and reduce the intake of dust while traveling. Throughout the van is ample ceiling lights and reading lamps, 2x 4Seasons hatches for better ventilation and a Dometic roof-mounted, reverse cycle airconditioner.

Moving into the bathroom, you’ll find a combination shower and toilet, a soft flow shower head, a large toilet seat and paper holder, and a fixed hand basin above the toilet. A mirror is mounted on the wall and an outwards opening hatch and extraction fan above the shower.
